In den 42 EU-Agenturen, die in 23 von 27 Mitgliedsstaaten ihren Sitz haben, arbeiteten 2020 insgesamt 12.090 Mitarbeiter…
… und die Agenturen erhielten im selben Jahr 2,891 Milliarden Euro aus dem EU-Haushalt.
Die aktuell sechs Exekutivagenturen sind von der EU-Kommission für eine begrenzte Zeit zur Wahrnehmung spezifischer Aufgaben bei bestimmten EU-Programen eingerichtet worden. Die 31 dezentralen Agenturen sollen die Zusammenarbeit zwischen der EU und den nationalen Behörden fördern.
Im Rahmen der Gemeinsamen Sicherheits- und Verteidigungspolitik (GSVP) sind drei Agenturen zur Ausübung bestimmter technischer und wissenschaftlicher Aufgaben eingerichtet worden. Die zwei Euratom-Agenturen sind zur Koordinierung der nationalen Kernforschungsporgramme für friedliche Zwecke, Bereitstellung von Wissen, Infrastrukturen und Finanzmitteln sowie zur Gewährleistung ausreichender und sicherer Kernenergieversorgung geschaffen worden.
